![]() I'm old enough to remember night times with my old transister radio listening to games played by the Orioles, Red Sox, Senators, Indians, Phillies and Reds. “In this age of MLB.TV and Extra Innings and HD and GameCasts and blogs run by multiple obsessives it's briefly fun to go back to the way it used to be, to rely on your knowledge of the pitch of announcers' voices and your ability to piece together a narrative from one word in four to follow a ballgame that's taking place on the edge of radio range.”Īgree with you100%. But after piecing together news by technological hook and static-ridden crook and finding the dispatches almost universally grim, we felt welcomed home. 500 and the third fourth installment of the Worst Day in the History of the Baseball World is about to be upon us. OK, so perhaps it's that the bats went eerily quiet after the early doings and the team's still under. What had been all the trouble we'd heard rumor of from afar? The fans did not resemble bags of fertilizer, even to the newshound with the most overly sensitive nose. (And didn't it seem for a moment like this might be the night? John Maine stepping on a losing streak, the Mets refusing to get swept, the Mariners about to hit the road? But of course it's never the night.) The umpires umpired peaceably. ![]() The Mariners showed no particular inclination to field or, for a while, to hit. A rather perky-looking David Wright swung heavy lumber. And so at 7:10 there they were - and why, we could barely understand what the fuss had been about. Joshua and I had missed our Mets, even with all their maddening habits. That's a long way to come - and all of it in the career of, say, Carlos Delgado.īut this evening the time for nostalgia was over. Last fall I watched the Mets lose on a laptop computer while pondering the lights of France across Lake Geneva on an autumn evening. One night about 15 years ago, during an ill-advised marathon drive, I listened to the Mets win on a car radio in the Georgia hills, FAN turned as loud as it would go, the faintest bits of syllables sneaking through borderline-explosive fusillades of static. And it's easy to forget how much has changed. In this age of MLB.TV and Extra Innings and HD and GameCasts and blogs run by multiple obsessives it's briefly fun to go back to the way it used to be, to rely on your knowledge of the pitch of announcers' voices and your ability to piece together a narrative from one word in four to follow a ballgame that's taking place on the edge of radio range. I wondered what the score was before I realized I was hearing the recap, and soon enough the grim duty in Wayne Hagin's voice strongly suggested the Ibanez shot had not been an isolated blemish. (All later released - we're kindly sorts.) The FAN told me Ibanez had hit a homer just over Trot Nixon's head, which was clearly bad. Tuesday night I reported for duty late, after letting Joshua stay up two extra hours to chase and capture fireflies. I sat by the radio for the final inning of Monday night's debacle. 500” emerging from the static to answer the what if not the how. Sunday's outcome was discerned in the car on the way back from a restaurant in Rockland, with general happiness in Howie Rose's voice and the brief phrase “back to. ![]() Saturday's game was assessed via a quick listen before going out to dinner (if it had been a Western, I would have heard the part where Pedro's horse threw him, he landed on a rattler and slid rapidly toward the edge of the cliff) and confirmed later via a text message to Google on the cellphone. Let's find out how those Mets are doing.Įxcept they weren't doing well. It's getting dark, the dishes are cleared, the chipmunks and turkeys have given way to mosquitos tapping at the screens and big moths thumping at the windows. Over the years of our visits I've gotten used to this - it's the way things are, so you accept it as part of vacation time, and even come to enjoy it as a departure from the home-front hurry-up. A 7:10 New York start, though, is going to be nothing but static until the middle innings at the earliest. A 10:05 start on the West Coast (oh, sorry Omar - that's a 7:05 start and I'm creating a negative perception) can be listened to more or less as you would at home, except for the wow and flutter of random atmospheric phenomena. Not “nighttime” as in we're busy during the day - the whole idea of Maine is to remember what it's like not being so darn busy - but nighttime as in WFAN only comes in after the sun is well and truly down. Maine is a wonderful place, except for the fact that in my folks' summer house across the river from Wiscasset baseball is strictly a nighttime affair. Joshua and I came back from the piney woods of Maine tired, happy and full of food courtesy of his grandmother.

![]() New effects have been added, along with 100 new additional presets. It is clear to understand and even easier to navigate the huge amount of presets that this instrument is capable of having. M-Tron Pro IV now sports a superb, clear and intuitive interface that allows immediate access to all its functions. M-Tron’s GUI was always a bit odd to my eyes, but in the last couple of years, GForce has made a valiant and concerted effort to address GUI shortcomings and with huge success. But it was in June of this year that this legendary plugin of a legendary instrument was brought slap bang back up to date. The original M-Tron Pro was an instant success and many updates and sound banks followed. And so it was that a fledgling GForce Software, headed up by their Yin & Yang founders, Dave Spiers and Chris Macleod, sought to restore the mighty Mellotron sound for a modern audience. Two traits not often displayed in this industry. Owners of originals will happily recount tales of mechanical woe, mid-gig failure and hilltop rituals with gasoline and matches. Its very inception is a tale of skullduggery and subterfuge. The Mellotron has always held a very unique place in musical instrument history. ![]() I was blown away by how much fun Harmonia was when I reviewed it and it will go down as one of their finest original moments for some time yet. Four LFO’s really expand modulation capabilities and the ever-present collection of effects is there to further enhance your sonic explorations. It’s a compelling sound generation method that pulls off the often difficult feat of being complex yet easy to use and immediately rewarding. Using a vast array of sampled waveforms, Harmonia allow you to sweep through different harmonics or tones in a way that’s not far off how wavetable synthesis works. This time they approached additive synthesis but with a unique twist. And with Harmonia, they upped the ante once more. Dreamsynth and Sines are two great examples. They strike a great balance between brilliant recreations of classic instruments and creating new and exciting ideas of their own. I’ve always admired Cherry Audio for mixing it up with their releases. This time, however, it is with an original synth concept. Given their prolific output this year, it’s no surprise that even over a three month period, Cherry Audio would make another appearance in this list. And I’m in no position to argue with my boss! Talking of effects, there’s plenty going on there too!Įven at $299.95, Bob felt this was the best Rhodes plugin he had ever played. In effect, you can create your very own, custom Rhodes at a very low level. Available in two flavours, Bob’s first task was to download 24GB of content that the Pro required! Each note on the V8 can be individually tweaked in a myriad ways. Bold claims, too! There have been some excellent Rhodes plugins over the years, so the V8 Pro had a fight on its hands. Reviewed by my boss, Bob Malkowski, a seasoned Rhodes user, the Rhodes V8 Pro promised the most detailed software recreation of the new Mk.8 or even any Rhodes plugin. But there was a glimmer of hope in us attaining those glorious tones in the form of the Rhodes V8 Pro plugin. Built for true players, there was a large swathe of us that could only look on and dream. Prices could reach the giddy heights of five figures before the decimal point, but there was never any doubting the workmanship and fantastic sound. With a strong commitment to quality and authenticity, the new Rhodes Mk.8 wasn’t cheap. Resurrected by Rhodes enthusiast Dan Goldman, Rhodes Music rose from the ashes in, of all places, Leeds, U.K. It was big news when the Rhodes name officially reappeared in the market place. It also added a superb effects section.Īnd at a mere $44 USD, this is a must have for any software based studio! This Cat had more whiskers in the form of polyphonic aftertouch and MPE support. Cherry Audio nailed the screaming characteristic filter and gave us everything we could wish for and more. It’s got a beautifully simple interface and a fantastic tone. The Octave Cat went head to head with the ARP Odyssey back in the day and there are many people who would argue all day long that the Cat gave it a run for its money. Always ones to go a little left-field with their choices, they managed to pull off a masterstroke in July with the brilliant Octave Cat plugin! Not only was this a faithful recreation of a much loved synth, but it was done with the blessing of Octave’s founder, Carmine Bonanno. Somehow, they seem to continue churning out amazing synthesizer plugins that contain huge amounts of fun at minuscule prices. I think it is safe to say that 2023, so far, has been Cherry Audio’s year. ![]() The OB‑Xa also had a dedicated vibrato LFO in its performance panel. You can direct the output from this to the oscillators' pitches and the filter's cutoff frequency with one depth, and to the oscillators' pulse widths and the amplifier gain with a second. Like much else here, the OB‑Xa V's modulation section is inspired by the OB‑8 rather than the OB‑Xa, offering an LFO with seven waveform options, key synchronisation and MIDI sync. The modulation window offers modulation capabilities far in excess of what was possible in 1983. They weren't the snappiest in the world and, at their minimum settings, those on the soft synth are considerably faster if you want to achieve the same 'spit' as you obtained on the original, you have to slow the soft synth down a little. (Other tracking rates can be programmed in the modulation matrix.) The filters on the original synths never quite oscillated in either mode, but the resonant peak seems a little more pronounced on the soft synth and that's no bad thing.Īll OBs had two ADSR contour generators, and these are reproduced here. The rest of the filter section is common with both the OB‑Xa and the OB‑8, with knobs for cutoff frequency, resonance and modulation amount (actually contour amount), plus switches for the 12dB/oct and 24dB/oct modes and 100 percent keyboard tracking on/off. Arturia have sensibly replaced all of these buttons with variable amplitude controls for both the oscillators and the noise. In addition, noise could only be on or off. On the OB‑Xa, there were six possible oscillator mixes: Osc 1 could be off (0 percent) or on (100 percent), and Osc 2 could be off (0 percent), half (50 percent) or full (100 percent). They have moved it from the Control section to the Oscillators section, which is a more significant modification than at first it seems.įurther differences are apparent in the filter section. Another change lies in Arturia's repositioning of Osc 2's fine-tuning control. ![]() And, while it appears that the OB‑Xa's ability to sweep the pitch of Osc 2 using the filter envelope has been lost, this is easily programmed in the soft synth's modulation matrix. Cross-mod was one of the main features of the OB‑X, but was dropped by Oberheim on the OB‑Xa, so it's great to see it reinstated here, especially since you can now determine the amount of modulation. You'll also find a cross modulation (X-Mod) knob sitting between the oscillators. Whereas the original offered just sawtooth, pulse (with PWM) and saw+pulse wave options, the soft synth adds the triangle wave of the OB‑8, which is a sensible and useful addition. You can immediately see the differences between the original OB‑Xa and the soft synth when you compare their oscillator sections. Indeed, OB‑Xa V might more properly have been called OB‑X/Xa/8 V, although that would be a lousy name for a product. But while Arturia may have chosen the OB‑Xa name, they haven't stuck to the OB‑Xa architecture. Perhaps that was a marketing decision for reasons that escape me, the OB‑Xa has always had a better reputation than the OB‑8. (See the 'A Bit Of OB History' box.) However, I was a little surprised to find that Arturia chose the OB‑Xa as the basis for their OB‑series soft synth. There would have been little point in modelling the earliest of the OBs, the OB‑X, because it was closely related to the 4-Voice and 8-Voice, and that territory has already been covered in large part by Arturia's SEM V. But today, half of that has been corrected. I've reviewed many of these, but it always seemed to me that two of the greats were missing: the Memorymoog and something from the Oberheim OB‑series. In those early days, the company sometimes got it right and sometimes less so, but by the time that they released last year's V Collection 7, there was no longer any question that their software could successfully emulate a long list of cherished instruments. Arturia's latest instrument is a software recreation of Oberheim's pinstriped polysynth.Īrturia's V series of virtual instruments started in 2004 with Minimoog V, and this was followed by emulations of classics such as the ARP 2600, Roland Jupiter 8 and Yamaha CS80. ![]() The goal is for the locks to look like that! Using a sharp knife, trim off the excess pastry, gathering the offcuts and rewrapping them to store for another baking project. Carefully lift the pastry and place it in the tin, pushing it into the corners and fluted edges. Dust a work surface with a little flour and roll out the pastry rectangle until an inch or so larger all round than the base of the pastry tin. First, preheat the oven to 180C/350F whilst preparing the pastry for baking. Step 3: Once the dough has chilled, it is time to line the tart tin. At this point, you can freeze the dough for another day, if desired. Shape the pastry into a long rectangle, wrap tightly in cling film and pop in the fridge to chill for at least 30 minutes. Squeeze it to bring together, try to avoid kneading and working it too much or the pastry will end up being tough. Step 2: Tip out the dough onto a clean work surface and gather it together. Add in the ice water a little at a time until the pastry dough comes together in clumps. Tip in the egg yolks and blend again until just combined. Ensure no large chunks of unblended butter remain or it will speckle the pastry when rolled out. Add in the cold butter and cut or blend in until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. In Android, clicking the rom will ask me to open it and choose the emulator to open it with but on the Vero 2 nothing happens at all. When using the file browser I can get to my USB where the ROMS are located and on my VERO 2 I can only see the ROMS in my SNES folder, not any of the other files in other folders for NES etc, so it seems that it only shows roms for EMUs that are activated. I need to manually selecti the emulator path, but it doesn’t allow me to actually navigate to the path where the EMU for SNES was installed (yes I did enable it -)). 圆4 and x86 builds are going ahead, however, and will appear once they get through the store. The exception is the Windows Store build for Xbox: this will, unfortunately, be delayed, and may even be subject to a future point release. Preferrably I’d like to use ROM collection browser, but even though I managed to install this addon from the repo, the config doesn’t show me the “use retroplayer” option which I assumed should have been in 18.9.
